Students hear messages of respect, forgiveness

Port Jervis Middle School eight graders ended their school day Sept. 24 with a lesson and presentation they won't soon forget. Hashim Garrett, Ann Marie D'Aliso and Charles Williams delivered a message of forgiveness, self-respect, and respect for others in "Breaking the Cycle."

Breaking the cycle at C. J. Hooker Middle School

The Breaking the Cycle speakers left the middle school students with a message of learning self-respect and respect for others. After all, according to Arnold, "Red or black or white, people are people and we're all the same. Empathy, compassion and forgiveness -- these are three words that young people should think about and practice every day."

Guided by the need to forgive

"Coordinated by the high school’s Interact Club, the assembly featured three speakers from Breaking The Cycle — program director Ian Winter, motivational speaker Hashim Garrett, and former Cornwall-on-Hudson Police Chief Charles Williams.

Winter introduced the program and spoke of the overall messages of well known non-violence proponents such as King, Gandhi, and Sen. Robert F. Kennedy, but also spoke of individuals like Columbine victim Cassie Bernall."
